The Muscat of Alexandria varietal is called one of civilization’s ancient vines for a reason, with documented use for winemaking going back 2,350 years ago. As the name suggests the ancient Greeks and Egyptians cultivated this varietal near the city of Alexandria, and the fruit’s musky citrus flavors and floral aromatics have ensured its continued popularity through the centuries.
This Old Vine vineyard was planted in 1962 in sandy granite soils deposited over time from the Sierra Nevada mountains (mostly Hesperia Sandy Loam with a little Hanford Sandy Load and Calhi Loamy Sand). The vineyard is self rooted and the well draining sandy soil allows for bright and aromatic fruit.
This Muscat Alexandria will make a wonderful still, sparkling, sweet, or fortified wine. Add 10-20% Muscat to any wine that needs a aromatic boost.
