Sandy Lane Vineyard in Contra Costa County is a historic California site—own-rooted, head-trained, and dry-farmed vines planted in 1888 grow in forty-foot-deep granitic beach sand along the Sacramento River Delta. This unique terroir, coupled with cooling Delta winds, produces fruit with structure, purity, and a distinct sense of place.
While Grenache from Sandy Lane is typically blended with other Rhône varieties, this is a rare opportunity to work with it on its own.
Based on the vineyard’s conditions and the characteristics of old-vine Grenache, we expect this fruit to produce aromatic, lifted wines with notes of wild strawberry, red plum, white pepper, dried herbs, and subtle earthiness. The sandy soils should contribute to fine-grained tannins and a bright, transparent structure, while vine age and dry farming provide depth and concentration.
Grenache can be deceptively powerful beneath its graceful exterior, and this fruit offers an exceptional chance to explore what this variety can do when it stands on its own—from a vineyard that’s stood for over 130 years.
This vineyard shares a fence line with Evangelho, now farmed by Bedrock Wine Co., and has been used by Ridge Vineyards and other top producers. These are true California heritage vines—enduring, expressive, and deeply rooted in the history of West Coast winemaking.
Quantities are extremely limited.
