Sonoma Coast, Durell Vineyard, Lower Blocks
This ultra-premium Chardonnay is grown in the Sonoma Coast AVA and features the Wente Clone planted on rootstock 420A in shallow, rocky soils. The Wente Clone is California’s signature Chardonnay and produces tight little clusters ideally suited for making big, mouth-filling Chardonnays that are fermented on oak, aged on lees, and undergo 100% maloactic fermentation. The full body of this wine gives way to caramelized apple and pear flavors with a rich vanilla-custard finish.
The vineyard yielded about two tons per acre, and we gently whole cluster pressed the fruit yielding about 178 gallons of juice per ton.
The 200 acre Durell Vineyard covers both the gentle rolling hills and rocky valley floor of southern Sonoma County. Morning fog and afternoon winds coming off the nearby San Pablo Bay cool the location and promote a lengthy, even ripening. The vineyard produces some of the most prized fruit in Sonoma with more than 20 wines receiving a score of 92+ points.
